The Urban Voodoo Machine Interview
The Urban Voodoo Machine is a cornucopia of eclectic musicianship that has to be seen live to truly appreciate. They are incredibly talented and a whole lot of Bourbon soaked fun! You can tell by this interview! Check them out!
Your stage show looks like you’re having a lot of fun. how hard is it to coordinate the live show?
We have fun of course, both on and off stage. I'm glad it shows!
How do you decide which songs will fit, is it based on the gig or the audience?
We
tend to do what we do regardless. We are The Urban Voodoo Machine and
we play Bourbon Soaked Gypsy Blues Bop'N'Stroll! We're probably the only
band in the world that has played metal festival Download and Montreaux
Jazz Festival.
Do you allow the songs to evolve during the gigs or are they complete at the time of creation?
Most
songs are written on an acoustic guitar so words and chord structure
doesn't change. With so many great players everyone brings something to
the table though and if you've seen us more than once I'm sure you've
had a slightly different musical experience - it keeps it fresh for the
band having a slightly rotating line up too!
What makes a perfect song for you. What has to be heard or felt?
It's got to have heart and soul!
Any subject matter you would not write about?
Nope. Nothing's sacred and no one is safe!
How do you feel about social media and its influence over the music business?
At least artists can be in direct touch with the fans rather than major
labels controlling everything! Don't forget to look up from your
screens and experience the show though - and remember if you only listen
to an artist on Spotify or YouTube, they get paid fuck all!
What has been the most challenging aspect of being a musician?
I like all of it really, although I could do with less time in front of a computer!!
What got you first involved in music?
Elvis died when I was 5, so I thought I'd better step in!
Any hobbies or passions outside of music?
Not that I'm aware of and I hope I don't catch any!
What is in the future for The Urban Voodoo machine?
No
idea! The future is unwritten to quote Joe Strummer! I'm quite
surprised in many ways that we've lasted 15 years, but then again some
of us wouldn't know what else to do and love it so maybe we'll keep
going another 15!!
Strangest thing that ever happened at a gig?
Our gigs are strange happenings!!
Anything you want to say to the fans?
If you are a fan of The Urban Voodoo Machine I would like to say this:
I love you, thank you for your support!
Now please go buy an album or a concert ticket for someone who hasn't heard us yet and bring us some voodoo virgins!
